In fact, the health benefits of short-term weight loss still need to be closely examined. Instead, your goal should be to eat nutritious foods that make you younger -- and make that a lifelong habit. The good news? Your waist may shrink as a fringe benefit.

Getting Started . . .

Kick-start your lifelong healthy-eating habits with these tips:

Focus on your waist, not your weight.

Eat three main meals, plus snacks, so you're never hungry.

Don't buy anything with more than 4 grams of saturated fat or 4 grams of any sugar (especially high-fructose corn syrup) per serving.

Strive for a rainbow of colors in your meals. Here's how to do that . . .

Eat a little healthy fat -- like a handful of walnuts -- about 20 minutes before a meal. It will take the edge off, so you won't be tempted to overeat.

Eat a fiber-rich breakfast every day.

Walk every day for 30 minutes.

A number of Drs have recently come out with this theory. To me, it's just another version of the same. To reduce your waste, you need to reduce your weight. I've been battling weight my entire life, as many people have. I could write a book on it, and my experiences would blow every theory I read (and I've read most of them) away.

Your body has a set point to maintain your weight at the calorie level you're at. Once you reach your goal by lowering your calorie level, the only way to maintain that weight is to make a life long habit of eating less, which is very difficult. It's no fun walking around hungry all the time.

I'm now reading "You Staying Young," which was co-written by your Dr. Oz, and Dr. Roizen. I ordered it through amazon.com. It's an excellent and well written book, and I highly recommend it.

I'm very familiar with their work. I couldn't have any more respect for Dr Oz than I now have. He's the genuine article. But I don't agree with their theory.

It's very possible to force your weight down, but your body will adjust and eventually automatically gain the weight back, plus some additional weight. Being on a lifelong diet and exercise program is simply not reality for most people.
