I posted this on another site, but you might find it interesting.
I just connected my laptop to my 32" HDTV and with sound.
I spent over a week asking people, at stores and on line what cables to use and how to do it. I got a lot of bad advise and found that salesmen in some electronic stores, Best Buy, etc. don’t know crap. And the advise i got on line was not much better.
For those who want to connect a laptop or desktop to a TV as a monitor, first of all your TV has to have a VGA plug.
All you need is a VGA cable, male-male ends for the video.
And a Audio cable, like the ones you would use for a CD player to hook up to speakers.
Connect one end of the VGA cable to the VGA outlet on the side of your laptop and the other end into the VGA outlet on your TV.
Connect the audio cable into the microphone jack on your laptop and the other end in the audio jack on your TV (should be right next to the VGA outlet). You now have sound.
To transfer the signal form the laptop to the TV first hit the input button on the TV remote to a screen come up saying PC, then hit the FN and F4 or F5 button (depending on the computer you have)on your laptop. The button may have a little monitor screen on it. Mine is F4. The image will transfer to your TV.
This is great for watching online movies on a big screen or you do not see so good.
