<font color="pink" size="05">Nowhere Special</font>

It was one of those hot summer nights. You know the kind, the kind where even the sheet sticks to everything. I couldn't sleep anymore.

It was a Friday night and I decided to stop in to the local joint and check out "Happy Hour". Two hours later I was home and bombed. I think they should post signs in bar windows saying the bar is celebrating the owners birthday. That way your not getting yourself in too deep right off.

Anyway, it was a Friday night, and it was HOT. I woke up just about 10 mintes before "last call". Wasn't no possible way I was even going to go back, but it was late, and sticky and HOT ! I peeled myself off the bed and went and looked out the window. I could hear everyones A/C running full bore. Everyone's except mine ! I watched as a lone gray cat walked the sidewalk looking for a "little". I remember wishing it was that "easy". I looked up at the sky and all the stars were twinkling my name. I wished I was born a hundred years from now and that I could travel to the nearest "Skybar" .

I spun around once I realized the cotton layering my tongue wasn't going to go away. I walked out to the fridge and opened the door, and there in the 'burned out bulb darkness' I could barely make out the jug of water and the bag of shriveled celery. I say jug of water, but trust me, there was only maybe a quarter inch of water left in it and it didn't look quite right. I slammed the door shut as I cussed myself out for not going to the grocery store instead of Happy Hour. I also cussed that Fridays always suck at the grocery store, as everyone is loadin up for the weekend. I walked over to the sink and tried to slurp the pipe dry but failed miserably.

Once I quenched my thirst and took a "not so friendly" sponge bath unexpectedly, I had a brainstorm.

Lets take a midnight drive !! YEAH !!!

I went and pulled on some clothes and grabbed my wallet, my keys, and the half stale, half empty box of Cheese Its. I locked up and headed out to my '53 Nash, pink over black, fold down seats, etc. I push her buttons and soon was headed out. About halfway down the block I slowed, "Where the heck am I going? ", I asked myself. By the time I got to the corner I knew. Since it was Friday and had no other plans I decided it was time to take a "Road Trip".

So I headed for the Interstate. Next big question ? North or South ? Flipped a cheese it and went South. Maybe I can reach the hotspring before dawn I thought. If I can remember where it was I turn off at ? Hmmmmm ?

Forty miles later, I turned off hoping it was where I wanted to go. I drove along about another 5 miles when all of a sudden I see a sign I never noticed before. It said "Nowhere Special" and pointed out a left turn. I never heard of a town around these parts by that name, but figured, Hey ! Why not !! Not like I had much better to do !!

I drove along a twisty, turney road much like the "Old Stagecoach" Road I remember from earlier days. I came up a small rise and there in front of me was a small little town. It had about 5 buildings and a few homes. I could tell right away nobody was up. Didn't see one single light on anywhere. Course I wasn't about to go knocking on any doors. Not at 3 a.m.
That can get you in a whole lot of trouble fast. Besides as I thought about it, What would I even say? Where am I ?

I don't think so, besides we all know what they'd say after they eyeballed me for 20 grueling seconds at 3 a.m.

I decided to drive right through it, go find some little secluded alcove and wait for morning and go see whats so special about Nowhere Special.

I found a nice place just past town and I pulled into a small thicket just off the road. I shut it off and soon was off in dreamland. I woke up about 9am I guess and decided to hoof it back and see if I could maybe score some breakfast somewhere. As I started walking through town I noticed that there were no vehicles of any kind to be found. I looked all over and saw no signs what so ever of any kind of life anywhere. I walked up to the local watering hole and looked inside the dirty window. I saw nobody but I did see a small light on in the back behind the bar. I walked over and tried the doorknob and it opened. I walked in and looked around. I wasn't real sure it was open for business anymore as it was pretty apparent that no one had bothered to dust anything anytime lately.

I asked out loud if anyone was in here. I heard nothing so I walked in and soon stood up by the bar and looked around to see if I could find any kind of sign that someone had been there lately. I saw nothing. I walked over to the side of the bar and as I looked around I noticed a big old book sitting on that end of the counter. I pulled it closer and upon further inspection I could tell it was an old ledger used for the daily business. Thumbing through it quickly I soon noticed that starting from the last page and working backwards, someone had starting keeping daily accounts of some sort of trouble brewing in town. After reading and scanning through about 20 pages I soon found out that this all took place about 25 yrs ago. I thumbed through it until I found the last entry. It was written in someone else's handwriting and it stated that the last 3 people were all heading to parts unknown soon and that for anyone that finds this book should burn it. I slid the old book away from me quickly as if I was trying to act like I hadn't read it. I looked around as if someone was watching me and yet I knew I was alone....... or so I thought......
